The US Senate Military Committee has directed Defense Secretary and retired General Lloyd Austin to explore the potential applications of blockchain technology within the Department of Defense (DoD). This initiative aims to enhance supply chain management and other national security applications.
This directive is part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) report released on July 9, 2024. The report includes specific authorizations for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and various defense projects.
The committee acknowledges the potential of blockchain technology to improve the integrity of the US defense supply chain and boost economic competitiveness. Blockchain technology can enhance the cryptographic integrity of the defense supply chain, improve data integrity, and reduce the risk of data manipulation or disruption by competitors.
Furthermore, the Senate Committee hopes that the DoD will explore blockchain use cases to achieve national security objectives. This includes creating secure, transparent, accountable, and auditable data related to the supply chain.
